SWPI Convenes Critical Conversation on Positioning Social Work Graduates for Policy Careers
Professional social workers have long pursued careers focused on influencing social policy. In December 2012, NASW’s Social Work Policy Institute and the Social Work Department at George Mason University convened a Critical Conversation, Influencing Social Policy: Positioning Social Work Graduates for Policy Careers, to promote a dialogue between social work educators who prepare students for policy practice and policy practitioners, especially those who hire entry-level policy staff. Stimulated by brief presentations by three policy practitioners (Jamie Liban, MSW, the Arc of Virginia; Marco Villagrana, MSW, the Joint Commission; and Linda Spears, Child Welfare League of America), the participants created an action agenda that can be useful to field directors, field instructors, policy practitioners and social work educators.
