SWPI Convenes First Critical Conversation – Social Work in Health and Behavioral Health Care: Visioning The Future

This period of change and uncertainty in health and behavioral care service delivery is an opportune time to highlight the essential and varied roles that social workers play in achieving better health outcomes and improved psychosocial well-being for individuals, families and communities. Social Work in Health and Behavioral Health Care: Visioning the Future  brought together representatives from federal agencies, foundations, national organizations, service providers, front-line practice, research and education to further articulate a vision for social work in the increasingly complex health and behavioral health care service delivery arena and to make recommendations to achieve this vision. The CRITICAL CONVERSATION was informed by a compendium of background materials, stimulated by brief presentations by four expert panelists  (Edward Woomer, Susannah Cafardi, Wynne Korr and Avivah Goldman) and facilitated by the Social Work Policy Institute’s Director, Joan Levy Zlotnik.

  1. Coming across this article has definitely inspired me to pursue my dream of expanding the social worker’s role in healthcare in our nation. Over the past several months, I have increasingly been pondering the ways in which I could use my social work background in the healthcare field, especially beyond the commonplace jobs were are in. (e.g. Medical or Hospice Social Worker). With the changes in our nation’s healthcare delivery system, the number of people who lack adequate healthcare services, the number diseases acquired as a result of health issues, all present a complex and challenging yet, wonderful opportunity for SWs. I am working toward being action-oriented in this area by obtaining the necessary experience and education. This was definitely a conversation that needed to be had.
